Decarbonisation

The umbrella term for moves – through tighter regulations, economic incentives and other interventions – to shift the economy from reliance on fossil fuels to electricity generated from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power and to alternative fuels, also known as the transition to a low-carbon economy. Sectors experiencing substantial change include power generation, the automotive industry (shifting from cars powered by internal combustion engines to battery electric and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles), manufacturing of key materials such as steel and cement, agriculture, forestry and buildings.
